Social Media: The New Wave of Recruitment? 

It’s a job seeker’s market, and the fight for top talent is continuing to get more and more competitive, especially as tech-savvy Generation Z enters the workforce. This new wave of employees has transformed the way employers handle benefits, company culture, and even recruitment. 

Gen Zers spend an average of 2 hours and 55 minutes on social media each day. They post photos on Instagram, Snapchat their friends, watch videos on TikTok, and connect with one another professionally on LinkedIn. Because Gen Zers are constantly communicating through these channels, it’s no surprise that employers began utilizing social media as a recruiting platform. 

Here are the top reasons why recruiters turn to social media during the hiring process: 

 

Promote Open Positions 

In 2019, more than 1 in 10 new hires found their jobs through social media. By posting open positions on social channels, you can attract candidates from all over and even reach qualified people who aren’t actively seeking new employment. As a part of your own search process, you can also use LinkedIn to sift through potential candidates based on their current titles, location, skills, and past education.  

By encouraging your employees to share your company’s open positions on their own social media accounts, you can reach even more job seekers. This will enable people within your employees’ personal networks to view your job opportunities, possibly even increasing your company’s amount of employee referrals.  

 

Conduct High-Level “Background Checks”

In addition to conducting traditional background checks, looking at candidates’ social media profiles is another way to learn more about them. According to a 2018 CareerBuilder survey, 70 percent of employers use social media channels to research job candidates during the hiring process. By scrolling through applicants’ posts on sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, you can quickly gain insight into their day-to-day life. 

 

Increase Employer Brand Recognition 

The more you advertise job opportunities on social media, the more people will become familiar with your brand. Not everyone who scrolls past your job postings is going to apply, but they may be interested in an opportunity you post in the future. When a position rolls around that sparks an interest with someone who has seen your posts before, they will be more likely to apply because they recognize your employer brand.

 

Showcase Your Company Culture

Utilizing social media to recruit also gives you an opportunity to impress job seekers through your own accounts. Spotlight some of your employees, show off your office perks, and document your events to attract candidates and give them an inside look into what they can expect if they join your workforce.
