Chase Simmons is a regional field marketing associate at Namely. While he loves planning unique, fun events, Chase didn’t always know he wanted to be a marketer. After holding jobs in the finance, hospitality, and customer service industries, Chase eventually stumbled onto a career in marketing thanks to his love for helping people and event planning.
We sat down with Chase to learn more about his role and his experience at Namely.
How did you end up in your role at Namely?
At my previous job, I managed events for The Slanted Door which is a famous, upscale restaurant in San Francisco. I have always loved working with people and organizing events, so when it was time to move on I wanted a job where I could have a similar impact on people’s lives.
I actually started at Namely as a customer service manager. While in that role, I got really curious about client communications and the different ways that we engage with our clients. The marketing team actually had an open position and after a few discussions with the team, I interviewed and was offered the job!
What’s your favorite thing about your role?
I love throwing events, but I think it’s organizing chaos and enjoying the end result. I love instant gratification. I’m a neat freak at home and I think I bring that characteristic with me to work. I like to plan things out, even though things never work out with events until the last minute. It’s really rewarding to see the end result of all of your work and planning.
What makes the SF office unique?
There’s not a lot of us in the SF office, but we all sit on a lot of different teams so it’s helpful to know what’s going on across the organization and have more visibility into everyone’s jobs. We’ve all been with Namely for a while too, so there’s a very strong family vibe as well.
What does your average work week look like?
It’s different every week, depending on what project I’m working on, but I try to follow the same format for everything. I make a lot of budget sheets, to-do lists, and schedules for events. I also communicate with our partners, outside vendors, and the rest of our marketing and production teams. Sometimes my weeks can be more low key if we don’t have a lot of events going on, but then the weeks leading up to larger events, like HR Redefined, are super busy. It definitely keeps me on my toes.
Is there something that would surprise people about your job?
Traveling for work is not always fun. At first, it’s fun to see new places, but living out of a suitcase and a hotel room gets old. I miss home a lot.
If you weren’t in this role, what would you be doing?
If money were no object, I would buy a lot of land in California and open up an animal rescue. When I was younger I wanted to be a wild animal vet, so that would be my way of making that dream a reality.
What’s your favorite part about working at Namely?
Absolutely the people. I love everybody that I work with and everybody that I come in contact with. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. It’s rare to work at a place where you can go into any office across the country and feel welcome.
What’s your favorite thing about working in marketing?
The people again! My team is excellent. I’m learning a new trade that I never thought I was going to be in. I never saw myself in a marketing position and I didn’t really even know what marketing was until I stumbled into this role. It’s been super exciting to learn all these new aspects and pick up the tricks of the trade from my colleagues.
What’s your favorite office snack?
Chocolate covered almonds. I eat them by the handful.
What's something your coworkers don't know about you?
I’m a pretty open book, but a lot of my coworkers don’t know that I like to skateboard. I used to longboard every day to work.
Do you have any advice for someone who wants to do your job?
Patience is a virtue with my job. It’s a lot of planning. You don’t see the fruits of your labor until the day of the event. It takes months and months of planning, but it’s all worth it in the end.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love to run and hang out with my dogs and my fiance. I also love being outdoors and hiking!
Who has inspired you to get to this point in your career?
My fiance Travis. He has supported me in a lot of different ways, especially when it comes to career growth. From when I started my career at a credit union to working a few years in hospitality to starting at Namely in customer success and now moving to marketing, he’s been there for me through it all. Without his support, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
